Spirit Animal Reading for 9/14/2018: Hawk medicine for if you’re feeling stuck or challenged

This has been an interesting week. Seems like there’s a lot of intense energy swirling around the planet. Or maybe weird stuff going on in the stars. Or something! I’ve had a lot of people mention feeling emotional, vulnerable, etc. Personally I’ve been experiencing some sort of cleansing reaction and a recurrence of flu-like symptoms (but it wasn’t the flu) that had followed me all through this past summer’s eclipse season. Fun stuff, for sure!

If this has been a bit of a rough week for you, too, today’s spirit animal reading is for you. The Hawk power animal came forward with a great reminder to keep it in perspective.

I was shown Hawk soaring, just scanning the landscape. I’m told they will do this in part to case out the scene for potential good hunting spots.

I’m seeing this as a reminder to rise above it when things seem challenging. To utilize the positive aspect of the element of air – which corresponds to our mind, our mental ability to think logically.

If you’ve been working hard on yourself, on raising consciousness or manifesting abundance, etc. and are feeling stuck or challenged, take the time today to sit back and look at the big picture. Look back to a year ago, and you will see the progression you’ve been actually making. Wow, right? 🙂

There’s a bit more, but I’ll let you watch the video to catch it.

Have fun, and if you like, post your observations below.

(And, if you’d like your own personal reading, book your session here.)

Spirit Animal Reading for 9/13/18 – Bison’s Tip for Abundance Right Now Today

Every day this month I am doing a spirit animal reading on my YouTube channel from my spirit animal oracle card deck.

The power animal coming forward for today is Bison, or Buffalo.

Bison is very often associated with Abundance, and that’s what came forward in this spirit animal reading.

I was shown the Bison feeding, and a great expanse of green grass underfoot. Bison asks: what sort of Abundance is waiting for you right under your nose today? The encouragement is to keep your eyes open for it, in whatever form it takes – and to be ready to reap the harvest when you find it.

Watch the video to find out the unexpected cache of something awesome I found in my sock drawer literally right after I pulled the card! 🙂

Spirit Animal Reading for 9/10/18: Monday Morning Owl Medicine

Today’s spirit animal reading brought up Owl. A big part of Owl medicine has to do with stealth.

If you’ve ever looked closely at an owl feather, you may have noticed the fringes at the edges, which is what gives Owl its somewhat soft, raggedy appearance compared to other birds.

owl feather

Even the feather fibers themselves are a bit furry.

owl feather

This feather feature helps to break up the air as the owl flies, effectively muffling the sound and allowing it to fly silently through the dark night air.

So this stealth can manifest in our lives in both positive and negative ways.

In its negative form, it can look like sneakiness or manipulation. So today, be aware of the possibility of manipulation. This could look like someone trying to slip something past you, or sneakily trying to influence you (whether consciously or not.) Or, it might be your lower self exhibiting sneaky or manipulative tendencies.

But let’s not spend too much time there, because I’m feeling that today we want to focus on the positive use of stealth.

Think “cloak of invisibility,” or maybe the Underground Railroad. There are times when it can be really advantageous to simply keep quiet and slip around doing your business or moving through undetected.

Maybe you just want to get some work done without getting caught up in office drama, for instance. Owl medicine can help you lay low.

How? Start by keeping your mouth shut! 😉 But also keeping in mind that strong emotions produce energy that can get you noticed, sometimes not in ways you want. So if you are feeling upset or frustrated or angry, take a little time to “soften those edges”, perhaps with a few deep breaths or a 5 minute yoga break.

A side benefit of keeping silence is that it opens up the opportunity to listen.

Owls are great at listening – in fact they locate their prey with their ears (watch the video to find out how.) It’s amazing what useful bits of information you can pick up simply by keeping your ears tuned!

So to put it succinctly, that’s the message for today from Owl: shut up and listen!

Try it, and see where it takes you.

Masculine and Feminine Energies in Spirit Animals

I love questions from readers. Here is one from Angie, about masculine and feminine energies in spirit animals:

Hi Christie! I enjoyed reading about owl totem. Can you tell me if different species put out different energies or is it based on sex of the animal. For instance, I believe snakes are a feminine energy which applies to both the male and female. Is that correct or no?

While in Sedona I discovered I didn’t react well to the masculine energy of a male juniper tree – it made me nauseous. However, when near a female juniper I felt fine. I would enjoy any insight you have on this.

Great question, Angie! Masculine and feminine energy, and the balance of the two, is a core spiritual topic. The divine union of masculine and feminine gives rise to new life on the material plane and the expansion of consciousness on the spiritual plane. The sexual energies have a lot to do with Unity, Harmony, Abundance, Manifestation, all those good things. Super awesome stuff, and super powerful stuff. When not in balance, though, watch out! The effects can be horrific.

For a lot of us, a central part of the ascension or self-realization journey has to do with balancing the masculine and feminine energies within ourselves, and getting them to work in harmony with one another rather than fighting or undermining each other. When we do, it enables and empowers our divine creative ability to manifest wonderful things in our lives and in the universe.

But it’s not always easy. Male and female energies are quite different. They have different needs and purposes, and don’t always see eye to eye. This is a topic worthy of its own post (or maybe even a book!)—so stay tuned; I’ll write more about it soon. For now though, let’s look at masculine and feminine energies in spirit animals. Identifying these can help unlock the lessons they can teach us about balancing the masculine and feminine within ourselves.

Male and Female Energy in Spirit Animals

Let’s return to Angie’s question (I’m paraphrasing it here:)

When working with spirit animals, do we consider that a species of spirit animal is either masculine or feminine? Or do we need to consider the sex of the individual animal we are working with?

First, we need to determine what type of power animal we’re working with.

When I teach about spirit animals, I usually spend a little time explaining what a spirit animal is, and about the types of spirit animals. I won’t go into that in depth here, except to say that we can work with power animals on the species level or the individual level.

On the species level, it’s like working with the oversoul of the animal: the collective spirit of all Horses, all Turtles, etc. (although we usually just say the spirit of Horse or Turtle.) It’s the spiritual energy associated with the species as a whole—the archetype of that animal.

On the individual level, you’re working with a specific animal of that species. This can be an animal that comes to you in spirit, or it can be a physical animal. (Or in Angie’s case, a plant.) This being will resonate with the archetypal energy of the species, but it will also have its own individual characteristics. For most animals, one of these traits will be its sex (male or female.)

So when it comes to the animal’s sex, do we work with the masculine or feminine energy of the individual animal, or of the species/oversoul?

The short answer is: both, or either—depending on circumstances.

But that probably isn’t very helpful. So let me explain a little about each.

horses power animal painting

Archetypal masculine and feminine energies in spirit animals

Some, but not all, archetypal (collective to the species) spirit animals have characteristics that tend to polarize more towards the masculine or feminine. Spider spirit animal, for instance, has very pronounced feminine energy, while an animal like Eagle leans more towards the masculine. This manifests in various ways in the animal’s behavior and physical structure.

There are also animals which are energetically highly dimorphic, meaning that the meaning can change if it appears in its masculine vs its feminine form. Take the Deer power animal, for instance: while they do share some things in common, the meaning of the Buck varies significantly from that of the Doe.

More rarely, you may find an animal that embodies both sexual energies very strongly. Personally, I regard Snake one of these. While it is phallic in form, it is also highly receptive (a feminine quality) in its habit of soaking up the sunlight. (I could go on about the masculine and feminine qualities of Snake but will save that for another post.)

So it’s quite common when a spirit animal to presents itself for it to be pointing out something to do with one of these energies.

Individual masculine and feminine energies in spirit animals

But what if it’s an individual animal that presents itself to us—one that is clearly its own being above and beyond representing its species?

eagle spirit animal painting

This happens quite a lot. Most of the time when we come across a flesh-and-blood animal it will be either male or female. But even animals that come to us purely in spirit or dreamtime will often appear as distinct individuals, and many times they will have an obvious gender.

Even if it’s not as clearly male or female as a bull vs. a cow, you can usually get a feeling for the sex of the critter. This may be different from the overriding sexual energy of the species as a whole. For instance, you can very easily come across a spider that is quite obviously male.

Working with the sexual energies of spirit animals

So when we’re working with spirit animals and sexual energies we do need to take into account the masculine and/or feminine energy of the spirit animal oversoul in question.  But if that spirit animal comes to us as an individual animal—whether purely in spirit or in the flesh—we also need to be aware of the sexual energy of that individual. Either one can override the other, or temper the meaning.

Ultimately, the important thing is to trust your intuition.

If you find that the sex of the animal (either the individual or the energy of the species) comes forward strongly for you, it probably has something important to tell you regarding the balance of masculine and feminine energies within yourself, or in a situation you are involved in. You will need to  keep this in mind and pay attention to your emotions and intuitive hits when working with the animal. Allowing these to guide your interpretation will help you arrive at helpful insights for your situation.

What is the Spirit Animal Meaning of Water Strider?

water strider spirit animal We’ve all heard the story of Jesus walking on water; it’s one of his well-known miracles. But in the animal world, there is an animal that walks around on water as a matter of course, and you are probably very familiar with it. Let’s explore Water Strider spirit animal meaning.

Meet Water Strider

You can find water striders across most of the world. You’ll usually find them in quiet, protected water, but they can handle some turbulence. There are even species that live in the open ocean. Because they skate around on the surface tension of water, they are often called Jesus bugs.

Jesus bug spirit animalSo what is the physics behind the water strider’s ability to walk on water? It’s not because they are so small and light; other small insects who fall into water get trapped in it. The water strider’s secret is in its legs.

A water strider’s legs have hairs that trap air bubbles. This creates a sort of super water resistance that allows the insect to not only float on its feet, but to skim about at high speed on the water’s surface. In fact, the effect is so strong that a water strider could carry 15 times its body weight without sinking. And water striders are lightening fast. Because there is so little friction between their feet and the water’s surface, they can move at 100 times their body length per second. That would be like a human going 400 miles per hour.

What is the spiritual meaning of Water Strider?

One of the things I get from Water Strider is the importance of being “in your element,” finding your place in the world, choosing to live in an environment that supports you. This can refer to your physical location, your home environment, your career, or even the people you choose to hang out with.

When we are in our element, we can do things others can’t do. We can even do things others believe are impossible. The Water Strider animal guide points out that you may be able to do things that go beyond what people think or even what you think is possible. When you’re in an environment that’s supportive of who you are—the real you, not the “you” others want you to be or the “you” that you think you “have to” be—you can really, really shine. (This also has a lot to do with Faith, which is a major Water Strider power animal meaning – more on that in a bit.)

Another Jesus Bug meaning is that you don’t have to be big in order to create miracles. You can work miracles of magic in daily life or on a small scale. We don’t have to be featured in Oprah to create a lot of magic around us. We don’t have to come out with a best seller. We don’t have to save the world all by ourselves, or embark on some exotic undertaking. Water Strider teaches us that just by being our little old selves, we can create a lot of magic wherever we feel at home.

Faith…

Let’s take an even closer look at Water Strider. It is an insect, so it has 6 water strider meaninglegs. But if you have ever seen water striders floating about on the surface of a pond or stream, what you usually see first is their shadows. And typically these look like little clusters of four dots, which are the dimples the insects’ legs make on the surface of the water. If you look at one a little closer you may identify 4 legs easily. That’s because the two front legs are smaller, and those are the ones they use to capture and handle prey.

(And by the way, water striders LOVE to eat mosquito larvae, which in my book is reason enough to love them. And if you really want to delve deeply into water strider totem animal meaning, explore Mosquito symbolism as well.)

So it’s just the four back legs that support the Jesus Bug when it walks on water. And the number 4 is very significant.

Spiritually, the number 4 stands for completeness. It is a very square, solid, stable number. There is a lot of fundamental power connected with the number 4: the four seasons, the four directions, the 4 phases of the moon, the cycle of the day (sunrise/noon/sunset/midnight), the four arms of the cross, etc. These are all stable, predictable things. The four-sided square is an earth symbol, and this number is connected with practicality, groundedness, stability, and security. It’s also associated with the archangels.

Water Strider tells us to have faith that we are supported, even when it looks like we are not. Even if we are experiencing turbulence in our lives.

water strider power animal The thing that creates the surface tension on the water is the attraction between water molecules. It’s basically positive attraction, it’s energy, it’s an intangible force very akin to love energy, or perhaps a physical form of it. It’s this Love energy in the universe that supports you. Christ consciousness, angelic presence, all of that—Water Strider’s spirit animal message is that yes, this is real, it’s here for you, the universe will provide what you need, when you need it. And when you trust that it will, and start moving around in that state of Faith, you really will start to see miraculous things happening in your life.

Just as an aside, we are here for a purpose. Generally the universe thinks fulfilling your purpose is far more important than your comfort. So when I say you’ll be given what you need when you need it, it’s a reminder to embrace everything that comes to you. Everything. The good, the bad, the ugly – it’s all here to support us. Understanding that at the core of every challenge that comes our way is a gem of wisdom for us to mine can help us to float over churning waters with grace.

…but wait, there’s more when it comes to Faith

Finally, let’s look at another interesting fact about water striders, and this has to do with the survival of the species: as a species, they are extraordinarily adaptable.

Specifically, water striders display an unusual intergenerational ability to adapt to their environment. The young may be born with wings or without, depending on how friendly the environment is that year. If the pond is in danger of drying up, they’ll be born with wings. In wet years, they are born without. It’s thought that this lets them conserve energy for what’s needed. So when Water Strider shows up, one of the things it could be asking you to do is to look for—and let go of—“dead weight” things in your life. And to be discerning, because these could be things that might be genuinely useful in other circumstances, or in the past or even potentially in the future, but could be compromising your ability to excel right now.

Again, it comes down to faith: trust that the Universe will provide what you need, when you need it, and there is no need to hang on to things unnecessarily for a rainy day.

Shadow meaning of Water Strider

Every power animal has a shadow side. These are traits the animal has that can point out things that might be happening in our lives that may not feel very positive. The thing to remember is that all of an animal’s traits have evolved to help it survive. A lot of times when challenges present themselves, they result from energetic or behavioral patterns we have developed as a response to challenging or threatening situations, whether in this lifetime or past lifetimes (or sometimes we take on these energies from others around us.)

The shadow side of Water Strider has a lot to do with sexual politics. There’s a very interesting and actually antagonistic relationship between the sexes in water striders, and it’s really all about coercion. The males tend to simply jump the females without any real courtship. In response, females have developed a genital shield they can put up or down at will to protect themselves.

So the spiritual lesson here is about shielding oneself, and especially protecting the more intuitive, vulnerable aspects of the feminine side of oneself. It’s a reminder to really protect that. So, setting boundaries, drawing the line, standing up for your right to dream, your right to have some time to do your creative work, your right to your body, all these things are part of Water Strider meaning.

But the saga continues. As mentioned, the female water strider has this little built-in chastity belt she can put up to prevent unwanted mating. But the males have figured out a way to get around it.

What they do is they hop on board and when they can’t access her, they start to tap the surface of the water. They do this to attract underwater predators, because with the female on the bottom, she is a lot more vulnerable to attack and has a lot more to lose. So a little bit of this blackmail activity is usually enough to get her to put out.

Is this politically correct? Absolutely not.

That’s Nature. It’s not always pretty, and it’s certainly not always politically correct from a human point of view. These behaviors came about in the interests of the survival of the species, and somehow that’s how it worked out with water striders. But this sort of thing is exactly what makes spirit animals such powerful allies and guides. They work to bring our awareness to some of the nasty things that can happen in the world (as well as many of the beautiful things). And awareness is power – it’s only once we are aware of what’s going on that we can take steps to put an end to it. And a lot of times the power animals can teach us ways to do that.

So some of the things Water Strider can indicate are the importance of spiritual protection and to be on the lookout for blackmail or manipulation. Pay special attention also to what your body is telling you, especially when it comes to sexual or romantic relationships. Even if you are married or have kids with the person, if you find your body tenses or recoils when your intimate partner touches you, that is a sign something is not OK. If you feel trapped in a relationship or feel like you “have to” stay when you—or a part of you—really doesn’t want to, you have the RIGHT to get out of that situation, whether it be by setting boundaries, getting counseling, or outright leaving the relationship. Don’t let anyone shame you or guilt trip you into thinking otherwise.

Summing up the spirit animal meaning of Water Strider

Positive meaning: Faith, miracles, security, support, spiritual protection, adaptability, discernment, preparedness, efficiency, letting go of what is not needed, being in one’s element

Shadow side: Challenges with harmonizing masculine/feminine; gullible and/or prone to depression or limiting beliefs; blackmail, manipulation, coercion

Elements: water, air
