One of these two paths is greater – which one are you on?

Sea lion power animal I’d love to share with you a Spirit message I received this morning:

You can choose to do, or you can choose to be. There is no wrong, but one is the greater path.

To be is to experience. To experience is to learn. To learn is to grow. To grow is to live. To live is to be a testament to Spirit.

We are the glory of Creation. We are the Song.

We live in a culture obsessed with doing. When we meet a new person, we don’t ask them who they are, we ask them what they do. We have confused doing with being.

Yet which is the greater? You cannot be without doing. But is it even possible to do without being? The one contains the other.

Many people wish to find their purpose. Most think that means finding the activities that bring you true spiritual fulfillment. And that’s a beautiful desire. But it’s all so much wheel spinning until you realize who you truly ARE.

Of course, in this life we have both. We are, and we do. But whichever one we choose to make primary becomes the center around which the other spins. And the center is where the power is.

Guess which one will let you make the most difference in the world?

If you are feeling ungrounded or off center right now, or like life is spinning you in circles, ask yourself:

Is your life right now defined by what you “do?” Or by who you really are?

Nature and Poets vs. Holiday Spin

I love hanging out with poets, because you never know when they’re going to blurt out something wonderfully interesting and profound.

I met a poet the other day who did just that. The conversation was something about the holiday season, and how things get so crazy at this time of year. I had mentioned that it’s really contrary to the natural cycles (here in the Northern hemisphere at least), because in these darkest days of winter all a body wants to do is hunker down and sleep.

And she said, “yes, did you know that’s the origin of the Advent wreath? After the hard work of the harvest was over, they’d take the wheels off the wagons and bring them in for the winter. And they’d decorate them with evergreen branches.”

(I learned later that the wheels were often hung horizontally above head height from the ceiling, which reminded some people of a circular window into Heaven.)

My poet friend continued: “It’s such beautiful symbolism because it spoke of the rolling wheels of work and activity coming to a halt, and putting them away and coming inside to be still for a while, with the promise of new life to follow.

Those of us who grew up influenced by Christianity know it as the season of Advent, but it doesn’t matter what spiritual tradition you follow (or none at all):

As the wheel of the year slows to a close it’s Nature’s cue for us to rest and regenerate, and seek the sacred heart of stillness within—for that is where everything, ultimately, both ends and begins.

Holiday time can be fun, but many people find it exhausting and stressful, too. This year, why not approach it just a little more mindfully?

It’s OK to let slide the parts that don’t really serve you. (Which for some of us could be almost all of it.)

And it’s OK to slip away from the hubbub, shut down your phone, ignore your email, and even forget about Facebook for a while—and enjoy the peaceful, nurturing darkness within.

The world can wait. And how much brighter it will be when you return.

The Power of Prayer

Angel of ReceivingWhen I was a kid, I remember my father telling me, “Never underestimate the power of prayer.”

I remember thinking it a little odd, because at the time he claimed to be an atheist. (Although he would qualify it: “I’m a Christian atheist,” he would say.)

Maybe it was the very incongruity of it that made it stick in my mind. But stick it did, even though I didn’t understand it fully until years later.

You may or may not have noticed I’ve been a little quiet lately. I’ve been experiencing some profound shifts. I won’t go into them now, except to say that miracles happen.

Miracles DO happen.

And prayer DOES work.

Profoundly.

Never, EVER underestimate the power of prayer.

Are you protected?

It’s a truly gorgeous Spring day today, so I feel a little funny about bringing this up, but it’s been on my mind lately and I was reminded of it again today, so it feels like it needs saying.

As much as we might like it to be, the world isn’t all love and light. Just like there are nasty bacteria, parasites and predators out there in Nature, so there are psychic energies that will take us down if they can. Anti-angels, if you will. Negative energies, evil spirits, whatever you want to call them. Some of them are downright vicious. And simply ignoring them or denying their true nature won’t necessarily get rid of them.

I’m not saying this lightly. I didn’t use to believe in such things, and I paid dearly for my naivete. Which is why I’m writing this. I will probably lose subscribers because of it, because a lot of people just don’t want to hear it. But so be it. Because it is SO important to be aware of these things and protect yourself from them.

What can you do?

1. Practice awareness. Negative energies can easily slip in when we’re not aware. Start really tuning in to what’s going on with your body and your emotions, and what’s going on around you. You can do that through non-judgemental observation and quieting your mind. Yoga can help with this, and meditation.

2. Cultivate discernment. Sometimes it’s hard to tell what’s really in your best interest. Get in the habit of asking your body. Your body doesn’t lie. If your “gut reaction” to something or someone is a tight or uncomfortable sensation, something’s probably not in alignment with your highest good.

3. Bring in protection
. Call in the Light, and angelic help daily. Archangel Michael is fabulous for this. Just ask him to surround you with protection. Your protector animal guides can help guard you from harm, too.
archangel michaelWhat NOT to do:

Don’t freak out. I’m not talking paranoia here. I’m talking basic protection and common sense. Like washing your hands after handling raw chicken. Or looking both ways before crossing the street. Or staying away from creepy people. Simple awareness goes a long way! 🙂

In the big, big picture, the dark stuff simply helps the light shine brighter. That’s its purpose, so there’s really no good or bad. But hey, in the little picture that we live in, it pays to be conscious of that stuff, and stay away from it. It’s so much more fun in the sun.

Sanity Check for Nutty Times

squirrel in pecan treeIsn’t life an adventure? Just when you think things couldn’t get nuttier, someone comes along and gives the pecan tree another good shake.

Keep in mind, though: while nuts can be hard to digest, they are a great plant source of protein, which is needed for growth.

In the kitchen, one way to make nuts far more digestible and even more nutritious and delicious is to give them a good soak overnight in pure filtered water. This removes the enzyme inhibitors which protect the seed from rot while it’s dormant – but make it hard for the body to absorb needed nutrition. (You can crisp them back up in the dehydrator or a low oven for long-term storage or snacking.)

But what to do when we are bombarded by metaphorical nuttiness?pecans on dish

One suggestion:

Practice Awareness.

When you find yourself in a situation where you feel frustrated or overwhelmed, instead of rushing in and automatically reacting (which is what most people do, and a big part of why the world is as insane as it is), consider following this simple 5-part awareness practice:

Quick Awareness Check for Nutty Times

1. Pause.

2. Breathe. When we get stressed we often stop breathing or breathe shallowly. Take some deep breaths from your belly to help balance yourself.

3. Observe. Notice what is going on in your body. Where do you feel tight/uncomfortable/in pain? Notice any feelings or emotions that come up. Notice any words, thoughts, or memories that pop into your mind.

4. Invoke. Ask Archangel Michael or another protective guide to be with you and protect you. (If you work with Michael ask him to surround you with blue protective light, and/or cut any cords of fear, tension or anxiety connecting you with the situation or person in front of you.) Or, simply imagine the gold-white light of Spirit forming a protective bubble around you.

5. Receive. Empty your mind momentarily. Open yourself to receiving guidance. Something will drop into your mind – a word, a phrase, instructions, a symbol, a color, an image. You may or may not understand what it means. If you do, act on it. If not, take mental note and jot it down later if you remember to do so.

You can do all this in just a few seconds, with practice.

It may feel awkward at first but if you do this consistently you will find that you start becoming aware of the difference between what is really worth reacting to and what is simply silliness or a false alarm that’s not worth wasting energy on.

It will also help to guide you towards the things that will allow you to start changing the situation for the better. (5 is the number of manifestation, after all!)

Over time, Awareness helps put everything in perspective. And that is what we need to do if we’re going to take these nutty earthly experiences and grow from them!
