The Power of Prayer

Angel of ReceivingWhen I was a kid, I remember my father telling me, “Never underestimate the power of prayer.”

I remember thinking it a little odd, because at the time he claimed to be an atheist. (Although he would qualify it: “I’m a Christian atheist,” he would say.)

Maybe it was the very incongruity of it that made it stick in my mind. But stick it did, even though I didn’t understand it fully until years later.

You may or may not have noticed I’ve been a little quiet lately. I’ve been experiencing some profound shifts. I won’t go into them now, except to say that miracles happen.

Miracles DO happen.

And prayer DOES work.

Profoundly.

Never, EVER underestimate the power of prayer.

Are you protected?

It’s a truly gorgeous Spring day today, so I feel a little funny about bringing this up, but it’s been on my mind lately and I was reminded of it again today, so it feels like it needs saying.

As much as we might like it to be, the world isn’t all love and light.¬†Just like there are nasty bacteria, parasites and predators out there in Nature, so there are psychic energies that will take us down if they can. Anti-angels, if you will. Negative energies, evil spirits, whatever you want to call them. Some of them are downright vicious. And simply ignoring them or denying their true nature won’t necessarily get rid of them.

I’m not saying this lightly. I didn’t use to believe in such things, and I paid dearly for my naivete. Which is why I’m writing this. I will probably lose subscribers because of it, because a lot of people just don’t want to hear it. But so be it. Because it is SO important to be aware of these things and protect yourself from them.

What can you do?

1. Practice awareness. Negative energies can easily slip in when we’re not aware. Start really tuning in to what’s going on with your body and your emotions, and what’s going on around you. You can do that through non-judgemental observation and quieting your mind. Yoga can help with this, and meditation.

2. Cultivate discernment. Sometimes it’s hard to tell what’s really in your best interest. Get in the habit of asking your body. Your body doesn’t lie. If your “gut reaction” to something or someone is a tight or uncomfortable sensation, something’s probably not in alignment with your highest good.

3. Bring in protection
. Call in the Light, and angelic help daily. Archangel Michael is fabulous for this. Just ask him to surround you with protection. Your protector animal guides can help guard you from harm, too.
archangel michaelWhat NOT to do:

Don’t freak out. I’m not talking paranoia here. I’m talking basic protection and common sense. Like washing your hands after handling raw chicken. Or looking both ways before crossing the street. Or staying away from creepy people. Simple awareness goes a long way! ūüôā

In the big, big picture, the dark stuff simply helps the light shine brighter. That’s its purpose, so there’s really no good or bad. But hey, in the little picture that we live in, it pays to be conscious of that stuff, and stay away from it. It’s so much more fun in the sun.

Sanity Check for Nutty Times

squirrel in pecan treeIsn’t life an adventure? Just when you think things couldn’t get nuttier, someone comes along and gives the pecan tree another good shake.

Keep in mind, though: while nuts can be hard to digest, they are a great plant source of protein, which is needed for growth.

In the kitchen, one way to make nuts far more digestible and even more nutritious and delicious is to give them a good soak overnight in pure filtered water. This removes the enzyme inhibitors which protect the seed from rot while it’s dormant – but make it hard for the body to absorb needed nutrition. (You can crisp them back up in the dehydrator or a low oven for long-term storage or snacking.)

But what to do when we are bombarded by metaphorical nuttiness?pecans on dish

One suggestion:

Practice Awareness.

When you find yourself in a situation where you feel frustrated or overwhelmed, instead of rushing in and automatically reacting (which is what most people do, and a big part of why the world is as insane as it is), consider following this simple 5-part awareness practice:

Quick Awareness Check for Nutty Times

1. Pause.

2. Breathe. When we get stressed we often stop breathing or breathe shallowly. Take some deep breaths from your belly to help balance yourself.

3. Observe. Notice what is going on in your body. Where do you feel tight/uncomfortable/in pain? Notice any feelings or emotions that come up. Notice any words, thoughts, or memories that pop into your mind.

4. Invoke. Ask Archangel Michael or another protective guide to be with you and protect you. (If you work with Michael ask him to surround you with blue protective light, and/or cut any cords of fear, tension or anxiety connecting you with the situation or person in front of you.) Or, simply imagine the gold-white light of Spirit forming a protective bubble around you.

5. Receive. Empty your mind momentarily. Open yourself to receiving guidance. Something will drop into your mind – a word, a phrase, instructions, a symbol, a color, an image. You may or may not understand what it means. If you do, act on it. If not, take mental note and jot it down later if you remember to do so.

You can do all this in just a few seconds, with practice.

It may feel awkward at first but if you do this consistently you will find that you start becoming aware of the difference between what is really worth reacting to and what is simply silliness or a false alarm that’s not worth wasting energy on.

It will also help to guide you towards the things that will allow you to start changing the situation for the better. (5 is the number of manifestation, after all!)

Over time, Awareness helps put everything in perspective. And that is what we need to do if we’re going to take these nutty earthly experiences and grow from them!

Out of practice receiving? Let’s change that!

love-1269038_1280We’ve all heard it: “It’s better to give than to receive.”

Ha. Tell that to your dog.

Dogs give and receive wholeheartedly, and without judgement.

They’re very good at it. And if you ask me, the average dog enjoys life far more than most of us two-leggeds.

The thing about giving and receiving is, it’s an energy flow. It’s got to be open on both ends.

But many of us get programmed (by ideas like the one above) that it’s not OK to receive.

Or that we’re somehow not deserving.

Nonsense, of course.

We’re all creatures of Nature, part of Divine Creation. We deserve to receive just like any other creature.

Not only that, but it’s important for us to receive love and good things. It empowers us to give in return. And thus ensure that the cycle of energy remains unbroken.

So with that in mind, here are 3 things you can do today to practice your Divine capacity to Receive:

1. Take your compliments. Next time someone compliments you, resist the urge to downplay yourself. Instead, flash them a beautiful smile and gift them with a heartfelt “Thank you!” It will make you both feel great.

2.¬† Say “Thank You”. We all receive amazing things into our lives on a regular basis without even thinking about it. Becoming consciously aware of how blessed we are opens us to receiving more. Consider something or someone in your life that you’ve been taking for granted, and give thanks for or to them. This is powerful and can really help clear up blocks to prosperity, especially when you do it regularly.

3. Expect good things to come your way. Keep your eyes open. Look for abundance, and you’ll find it. ūüôā

Are you living your Purpose? A spirit animal’s perspective

“The purpose of life is Life.” – Joseph Campbell

circle sm

I channeled this painting for a client recently. The image came first, but it felt like something was missing. So I took a break and started cleaning out a shelf in the studio. And as luck would have it a piece of paper fell out with these words printed on it:

The Sun is a Circle/The Moon is a Circle/The Earth is a Circle/We are a Circle

Everything that is, is alive/And everything has a place on the Circle.

I remembered someone handing that sheet of paper to me at an event I attended last fall, but I don’t know¬†who the author is (or if it even has an author.) Regardless, it seemed to provide the missing element.

The message that comes through to me here is all about grounding, and balancing, and relaxing into the art of being.

Being, in terms of feeling oneself a part of all that is.

Knowing that simply being is enough.

We often spend such time and energy worrying about “Purpose.” And indeed some of us do have a burning mission in life.¬†

That’s beautiful when it happens, but what if your purpose isn’t clear to you?¬†

I think the bird in this painting has something to say about that.

You might think at first that it is a Crow. I did, when I first saw it in my mind’s eye. But once I got it down on paper it was quite clear¬†that this spirit animal was¬†not a Crow, but a Grackle.

A Common Grackle, to be precise.

Grackles are indeed common birds. If you live in the eastern half of North America you’ve probably seen these black birds¬†gathering in noisy flocks in treetops, or strutting across your lawn. They are boisterous, opportunistic birds that eat nearly anything and are actually much more likely than crows to steal corn.

At first glance you might not think there was much about a Grackle to write home about, with its somber dress and creaky voice. But if you look more closely at the Common Grackle you will see that it is really quite a striking bird. Its head and neck are not actually black but are covered in iridescent feathers ranging from purple to green to bronze. It has a distinctive white eye that contrasts sharply with its body. And its elongated, v-shaped tail lends a graceful touch to its figure.

To me the Grackle’s message is to appreciate the beauty,¬†magic and majesty of ordinary, everyday life.¬†To honor one’s physical being and delight in the strength and power of the body as a divine vehicle for Spirit.¬†

It also connotes the night, a time of feminine power. In fact, the grackle
with its white eye resembles the feminine “yin” of the famous Chinese yin-yang symbol.

We are all a part of the body of Mother Earth. Our bodies, our blood: her soil and water sparked to life. Our breath and her air are one. Her fire burns in our souls.

Is it not enough to simply be? Were we not born into the world as sacred beings? Can not our most simple, everyday actions become so infused with love that they are in themselves a prayer that is felt, seen, heard and understood without need for words or explanation?

That is the power of the divine feminine – a power that is felt, wordless, in the body and expressed naturally when we share the joy of living with others.

Just as a gorgeous iridescent rainbow lies hidden in the¬†Grackle’s “black” feathers, so there is hidden treasure in the commonness of our lives.¬†¬†A treasure we often miss in our pursuit of Purpose.

But sometimes, when we allow ourselves to quiet down, to ground ourselves and simply be, Purpose has a way of revealing itself after all.
