Crushing Guilt

Guilt is an interesting emotion, because it subverts and manipulates Love. If Love is not present, it’s impossible for guilt to take hold.

Sometimes in life we find ourselves in situations where our best interests appear to conflict with another’s. This is a breeding ground for guilt.

For many years I struggled with guilt around eating animal products. I tried just about every meat-free diet under the sun, from lacto-ovo vegetarian to raw vegan. Eventually I would always end up feeling physically, mentally, and/or emotionally imbalanced. It seems that at least for now my particular body needs at least a small amount of meat.

This disturbed me. I wrestled with it for years before I finally thought to ask my guides for their perspective.

“We are all one,” they said. “Nature eats itself in order to grow and expand in consciousness. This is a gift of the animals to you, given out of love at the soul level, for the sake of the All. Accept and receive it with gratitude. Do not allow feelings of guilt to taint your receiving. Guilt does not honor their sacred gift.”

I noticed that the more stress I was under the greater my need for meat. I was given to understand that part of the animals’ gift is to help ground and connect me to Mother Earth so that I can more easily deal with denser energies. I was also told that as I progress spiritually and learn to live in love, my need for animal products will lessen, and this has proven to be the case. I hope at some point to give them up altogether. In the meantime, I do my best to choose ones that are produced as humanely as possible, and give thanks at each and every meal.

Not everyone struggles with this particular issue, but nearly all of us experiences guilt at one time or another.

Guilt binds. It is the enemy of freedom. If you are dealing with guilt, know this:

  • We are here for a reason. We do have needs and it’s important that our real needs be met so we can move towards our higher purpose.
  • Each individual is responsible for determining and honoring their own real needs.
  • Sacrificing our real needs for another in a way that is counter to our purpose is not an act of love and will create karma for both.
  • Guilt does not honor another’s sacrifice for our well being. Gratitude does.*
  • When we wrong others, guilt will not heal the wounding. Forgiveness will.

If you are struggling with feelings of guilt, connect with the other person at the soul level. Express your love and gratitude for them, and ask for forgiveness, both from them and from yourself.  (You can do this at the soul level if the person’s ego is unable to forgive.) Also send yourself a lot of love.

Then, ask your angels to help you clear any feelings of guilt around the situation, and guide you to the best actions to take moving forward. The Hawaiian practice of ho’oponopono can also be hugely helpful.

Much love and many blessings,

Christie

*Sometimes we must choose between courses of action that all appear to deny our real needs. In this case the path that honors the highest real need will be the most desirable—which may entail a great deal of sacrifice. Jesus is a great example of this.

Nature and Poets vs. Holiday Spin

I love hanging out with poets, because you never know when they’re going to blurt out something wonderfully interesting and profound.

I met a poet the other day who did just that. The conversation was something about the holiday season, and how things get so crazy at this time of year. I had mentioned that it’s really contrary to the natural cycles (here in the Northern hemisphere at least), because in these darkest days of winter all a body wants to do is hunker down and sleep.

And she said, “yes, did you know that’s the origin of the Advent wreath? After the hard work of the harvest was over, they’d take the wheels off the wagons and bring them in for the winter. And they’d decorate them with evergreen branches.”

(I learned later that the wheels were often hung horizontally above head height from the ceiling, which reminded some people of a circular window into Heaven.)

My poet friend continued: “It’s such beautiful symbolism because it spoke of the rolling wheels of work and activity coming to a halt, and putting them away and coming inside to be still for a while, with the promise of new life to follow.

Those of us who grew up influenced by Christianity know it as the season of Advent, but it doesn’t matter what spiritual tradition you follow (or none at all):

As the wheel of the year slows to a close it’s Nature’s cue for us to rest and regenerate, and seek the sacred heart of stillness within—for that is where everything, ultimately, both ends and begins.

Holiday time can be fun, but many people find it exhausting and stressful, too. This year, why not approach it just a little more mindfully?

It’s OK to let slide the parts that don’t really serve you. (Which for some of us could be almost all of it.)

And it’s OK to slip away from the hubbub, shut down your phone, ignore your email, and even forget about Facebook for a while—and enjoy the peaceful, nurturing darkness within.

The world can wait. And how much brighter it will be when you return.

The Power of Prayer

Angel of ReceivingWhen I was a kid, I remember my father telling me, “Never underestimate the power of prayer.”

I remember thinking it a little odd, because at the time he claimed to be an atheist. (Although he would qualify it: “I’m a Christian atheist,” he would say.)

Maybe it was the very incongruity of it that made it stick in my mind. But stick it did, even though I didn’t understand it fully until years later.

You may or may not have noticed I’ve been a little quiet lately. I’ve been experiencing some profound shifts. I won’t go into them now, except to say that miracles happen.

Miracles DO happen.

And prayer DOES work.

Profoundly.

Never, EVER underestimate the power of prayer.

Sanity Check for Nutty Times

squirrel in pecan treeIsn’t life an adventure? Just when you think things couldn’t get nuttier, someone comes along and gives the pecan tree another good shake.

Keep in mind, though: while nuts can be hard to digest, they are a great plant source of protein, which is needed for growth.

In the kitchen, one way to make nuts far more digestible and even more nutritious and delicious is to give them a good soak overnight in pure filtered water. This removes the enzyme inhibitors which protect the seed from rot while it’s dormant – but make it hard for the body to absorb needed nutrition. (You can crisp them back up in the dehydrator or a low oven for long-term storage or snacking.)

But what to do when we are bombarded by metaphorical nuttiness?pecans on dish

One suggestion:

Practice Awareness.

When you find yourself in a situation where you feel frustrated or overwhelmed, instead of rushing in and automatically reacting (which is what most people do, and a big part of why the world is as insane as it is), consider following this simple 5-part awareness practice:

Quick Awareness Check for Nutty Times

1. Pause.

2. Breathe. When we get stressed we often stop breathing or breathe shallowly. Take some deep breaths from your belly to help balance yourself.

3. Observe. Notice what is going on in your body. Where do you feel tight/uncomfortable/in pain? Notice any feelings or emotions that come up. Notice any words, thoughts, or memories that pop into your mind.

4. Invoke. Ask Archangel Michael or another protective guide to be with you and protect you. (If you work with Michael ask him to surround you with blue protective light, and/or cut any cords of fear, tension or anxiety connecting you with the situation or person in front of you.) Or, simply imagine the gold-white light of Spirit forming a protective bubble around you.

5. Receive. Empty your mind momentarily. Open yourself to receiving guidance. Something will drop into your mind – a word, a phrase, instructions, a symbol, a color, an image. You may or may not understand what it means. If you do, act on it. If not, take mental note and jot it down later if you remember to do so.

You can do all this in just a few seconds, with practice.

It may feel awkward at first but if you do this consistently you will find that you start becoming aware of the difference between what is really worth reacting to and what is simply silliness or a false alarm that’s not worth wasting energy on.

It will also help to guide you towards the things that will allow you to start changing the situation for the better. (5 is the number of manifestation, after all!)

Over time, Awareness helps put everything in perspective. And that is what we need to do if we’re going to take these nutty earthly experiences and grow from them!

2017

Star Mandala II - watercolor painting by Christie Michelsen
Star Mandala II: watercolor painting by Christie Michelsen

Happy 2017! I hope you and your loved ones enjoyed a fun and blessed holiday season.

It’s been a while since I last posted. I won’t bore you with the details but I’ve been fighting a battle of self-acceptance. To be honest it’s scary to put oneself out there, as those of you in business (and many other pursuits) know.

With the help of some wonderful guides, both human and spirit, I’ve been learning to value who I really am, not who I think someone else thinks I should be. Realizing that I – like all of us – have unique gifts that are meant to be shared. That denying myself the pleasure of fully honoring these gifts and standing up for my right to do so serves no purpose other than to withhold Light from the world – Light the world so desperately needs.

We’ve recently transitioned into a brand new year. I’ll be honest with you – my gut feeling is that we’re going to start seeing one hell of a shake-up in 2017. But I don’t see it as a bad thing. Rather, as an opportunity and an invitation to shed that which is no longer relevant and allow ourselves to shine.

For me, a key part of letting my light shine is to continue to share these thoughts and inspirations with you. Thank you so much for reading, and being the beautiful person you are.

At the heart of your Being, at the heart of ALL there is, is Light. A Light that can never be extinguished, and that is stronger than any darkness. Never forget it. Let it be a beacon to guide us safely through the storm.

How will you let your Light shine this year?
